Mars Defense System

MPI) 36 Zorpal - The Martian Aerospace Defense Command today announced the destruction of the latest incoming missile from Earth, at 0345 Mars Standard Time.

This is the latest in the forty year bombardment of our planet and the twenty-second destroyed in thirty-four attacks. It is also the second successful intercept in recent cycles. A third alien device has gone into orbit, and no longer remains a threat. A fourth is expected about 60 Zorpal or 1 Flabwab. Air Marshal Xlazwatz expressed confidence.

"This isn't like the old days. The first attacks took us completely by surprise. Happily, they fell in remote areas."

At the time most educated Martians assumed that Earth was uninhabited, because of its high temperatures, crushing gravity, dense atmosphere and the corrosive liquid water that covers most of the surface. Scientists are still unsure of their motives for this unprovoked attack. Some feel that the earth creatures must be preparing to abandon their oppressive world for ours. Others feel their motives must be religious. Scientists are still undecided what monsters might have evolved under such conditions.

"Whatever they look like, they sure are persistant", laughed Marshal Xlazwatz. "And their technology is improving all the time. But so is ours."

Planetary Defence Forces had become skilled at detecting, deflecting or destroying alien craft, although one still gets through.

The original attacks were made with single missiles. Later they came in twos, and recently, even in groups. All Martians held their breaths as the planets made their closest conjunction ever last Zalspak. Alarmists predicted that dozens, even hundreds of missiles would be launched against us. Some even predicted they would be followed by an invasion fleet carrying the monsters themselves. These fears were unfounded and so far, only these few have shown up.

"Still, this is no time for complacency," said Marshal Xlazwatz. "We cannot take the chance of letting one of these things smash through the main dome of the High Temple during the Fertility Dance. Unless we remain vigilant, one day it will happen."
